When You’re Buying That New Cooling System, Look For The Energy Star Label And The SEER Rating

Air conditioning is an absolute necessity if you are going to live in southern Arizona, and when it comes time to replace your A/C unit, you want to install one that will last a long time and operate as efficiently as possible. The right unit will cut your electric bills and end up saving you ample money over the long run.

A great deal has changed in the HVAC industry over the last five years. There has been a great effort to conserve energy, which has produced new models that can cool your home at half the cost of models that were produced over 10 years ago. The federal government has been behind the push to produce high-efficiency air conditioners, and to encourage people to upgrade their HVAC systems has been offering financial incentives in the form of tax credits.

The federal Energy Star program provides the tax credits and sets the rules for how to qualify for the savings. New air conditioning units are ranked based on their SEER, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The SEER measures how much electricity is required to operate at maximum efficiency. The higher the SEER, the less energy is needed.

For an A/C unit to earn the Energy Star label and qualify homeowners for the tax credits, the SEER rating must be at least 16 for split systems that have an A/C condenser outside and a separate air handler inside. When you upgrade your A/C unit to one of these high-efficiency models, the government estimates that you can cut the cost of operating your cooling system by 30-50 percent.
