Experiencing heat pump problems during the Yuma area’s long cooling season is not a pleasant situation to be in. Try these simple remedies to see if it’s possible to get your system up and running before you make a service call.
DIY remedies 
Heat pumps need unhindered airflow and correct refrigerant charge to function properly. If your heat pump has power, but there’s a problem with temperature, or inadequate or unbalanced airflow, take these steps:
- Inspect your air filter. A dirty filter impedes airflow and increases energy consumption.
- Make sure that all air-supply registers are open and free of debris.
- If accessible, check if the indoor evaporator coil has ice buildup (cooling mode). If there is ice, turn the system off and call your HVAC technician.
If your heat pump does not power on:
- Check the thermostat to make sure that it’s set in the correct mode for cooling or heating.
- Check the circuit box. It’s possible that a breaker switch has tripped.
- There may be an additional power switch located near or on the indoor cabinet. Make sure it’s on.
Professional preventive maintenance
The best thing you can do for your heat-pump system is to schedule planned maintenance. Heat-pump systems are capable of delivering excellent energy efficiency for many years when well maintained. If a heat pump falls into disrepair, efficiency can deteriorate by as much as 25 percent.
An HVAC technician will check for correct refrigerant levels for optimal heat exchange. The evaporator and condenser will be thoroughly cleaned for efficient airflow. Even your duct system will be evaluated for leaks and loose connections to ensure balanced air circulation through your home. The drainage system also needs to be cleared of any blockages at the start of the cooling season to prevent water overflow within your home.
