Common Reasons Why Your A/C Is Blowing Hot Air

Common Reasons Why Your A/C Is Blowing Hot AirIn the midst of a hot summer’s day, a warm breeze from your air conditioner is the last thing you want to feel. Of course, this is something you’d want to fix pronto, but first you must determine what’s causing the problem. Here are a few reasons that could explain why your A/C is blowing hot air.

What’s the Problem With Your Cooling System?

  • The thermostat isn’t set properly. Make sure the selector switch is set to “cool” instead of “heat.” Also, make sure the thermostat temperature is set a few degrees lower than the current ambient temperature.
  • A dirty air filter could be clogging things up. An old air filter could be blocking the airflow your air conditioner needs to cool properly. Replacing the air filter not only lets your A/C cool more effectively, but it will also help you breathe a little easier by trapping airborne contaminants.
  • There may be something wrong with the condenser. The most common problem involves leaves and other debris blocking airflow to the condenser coil. It’s a good idea to remove debris from the condenser with a garden hose and remove vegetation from around the bottom of the condenser cabinet.
  • It might be a refrigerant-related problem. For instance, a loss of refrigerant due to a leak can cause frost buildup on the evaporator coil, preventing the air conditioner from cooling properly. This is an issue that’s best handled by a trained HVAC professional.
  • The compressor isn’t working properly. An overheating, leaking or noisy compressor could create cooling problems for your air conditioning system. Again, this is something that should be checked out by your technician.
