Central Heating Problems to Watch Out For

Central Heating Problems to Watch Out ForLife is full of unexpected events, and there’s always the potential for even the most reliable heating system to have an unexpected problem. As a result, it’s always a good idea to keep your eyes peeled for these common central heating problems:

Partial Loss of Heat

A partial loss of heat may be caused by blocked or leaking ductwork. Try to inspect as much of your ductwork as you can and check for gaps, cracks and blockages in the ducts. Also make sure your vent registers aren’t closed and that there are no obstructions blocking the return air intake.

Complete Loss of Heat

If you can’t get your heating system to turn on, make sure it’s getting electrical power and set the temperature on the thermostat high enough to trigger the furnace. If you can’t get any power to the furnace, you may want to have your contractor take a look.

Malfunctioning Thermostat

If your thermostat becomes non-responsive, replace the battery inside the thermostat with a fresh one. If your home becomes too hot one moment and too cold the next, you may need to have a HVAC technician re-calibrate your thermostat or replace it with a programmable thermostat.

Pilot Light Problems

The pilot light should not only be lit at all times, but it should also have a strong blue flame. If you see a weak yellow flame or if the pilot light keeps going out, you may need to have a professional take a look.

Short Cycling

Under normal operation, your home’s furnace should run for several minutes until indoor temperatures reach your thermostat’s set point. If the furnace constantly shuts on and off, there may be a short cycling problem that only your HVAC technician can fix.

Catching these central heating problems early on makes them much easier and less expensive to fix. For more information about central heating problems, contact us at Hansberger Refrigeration and Electric Company. Since 1952, we’ve helped Yuma homeowners with their heating and cooling needs.
