The Best Energy Saving Temperature for AC Units in Summer

Yuma has the honor of being the hottest city in the United States, with temperatures higher than 90 degrees 175 days a year. As Yuma homeowners know, it can be challenging to save energy while staying cool. Fortunately, initiating some energy-saving practices, including setting an energy saving temperature for AC, will help keep your summer bills under control.

Setting Back the Thermostat

One of the best ways to save on energy is to set back your thermostat during the day when everyone is out of the house and at night when people are less active. While we in Yuma who are used to hot temperatures may not be able to set back the thermostat between seven and 10 degrees for eight hours the way homeowners in milder climates can do to find an energy saving temperature for AC, our low humidity does mean we can feel somewhat comfortable setting the thermostat back a few degrees for eight hours during the day and, at night, cutting back and using fans.

Using a programmable or a Wi-Fi thermostat, you can set the temperature to reflect this energy saving temperature for AC so that you aren’t manually adjusting the thermostat. Also, you can most likely set your thermostat for about 78 degrees or so when you’re at home. Raise the thermostat a few degrees when the home’s occupants are away.

If you do set a higher temperature in the home, check to see if it is cool enough for any pets that will remain in the house during the day.

Also remember that when you come home from exercising or working hard and you’re hot and sweaty, you will not cool the house off any faster by jamming down the thermostat. That just ensures that the air conditioner runs longer.

Energy-Saving Tricks for Cooling Your Home

Some other tricks for keeping cool while maintaining an energy saving temperature for AC:

  1. Cover windows to keep out solar radiation.
  2. Don’t cook or use appliances (washer, dryer, dishwasher) in the heat of the day.
  3. Use ceiling fans to cool off your home’s occupants.
